Cantata 140: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme
(Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying)
This is one of Bach's best known and most eloquent cantatas, written for the Advent season. The monumental
first movement features intricate writing for the altos, tenors and basses,
that underlies the sopranos who soar above with the Chorale melody. There are
two provocative duets on the nature of the love relationship between humans and God.
The tenors are featured in a heroic statement of the Chorale melody- one of the most
famous movements ever written by Bach. A masterwork.
